The Experience
Most electrical contractors may be able to do underground work as a sideline. As the electrical field is very broad and a lot of contractors will do a bit of everything you may not receive the best refined and efficient systems which deliver a low-cost option to clients. However Brad Kennedy Electrical decided to tailor their business to installing, repairing & maintaining underground power. This assures a smoother process and a more competitive price.

Getting Power Connected to Your Block of Land
1.
At the front of your land, you will either have underground power or overhead power. There are two options for connecting overhead power from Energex or Ergon. Either a steel (hot dipped galvanised) property pole or a timber property pole is required for the supply authority to connect power to your property.
2.
This property poll can be installed up to a maximum of 20 meters from your boundary. We will organise the installation and application forms, the electrical connection to your property pole, Energex/Ergon meter board, supplying underground power to your shed, house, granny flat, removal house, irrigation pump, commercial complex or farm.
Cable Sizing
Extract from the Australian Standards AS 3000 (3.6.2): “The cross sectional area of every current carrying conductor shall be such that the voltage drop between the point of supply and the low voltage installation at any point in that electrical installation does not exceed 5% of the nominal voltage at the point of supply.”
What Cable Size Will I Need?
3.
Simply put, the longer the run of your underground main cabling, the larger the size of your cable.
‘Long Run Underground Cabling’ requires technical understanding and mathematical formulas to ensure the voltage drop and current carrying is worked out correctly. Time after time, we see the incorrect cable size being used. Because we do this work weekly – very rarely are we beaten on price. In fact, we encourage you to get another quote so you can see the cost saving by using Brad Kennedy Electrical. Written quotes needs to stipulate:
- voltage drop allowed
- the current draw in AMPS
- cable size they will use.
If your electrician cannot do that – ask yourself, do they have the technical ability to complete the job?
4.
There is nothing more distressing than the look on peoples faces when they find out that the last job that the ‘last electrician’ has done doesn’t work out or is inadequate/undersized. When we arrive at your place to complete the job, we have the cable and conduit set up and ready to roll out. Most of our cable sizes run from 50-500 meters, however we stock on 500-1000 meter drums. This means no waste, and more savings for you.
Excavation & Earth Works
Correct size and type of machines are critical to getting the job done efficiently. Whether it's a trench digger - excavators between 1.5 stone and 15 tonne or backhoe. You don't want a small machine to be attempting to dig through rocks and tree roots over long distances. And you don't want a 15 tonne machine in your suburban backyard tearing your grass and gardens to shreds.
We are happy to work with you or a machine operator of your choice. We also have a number of earth moving operators with an array of machines, to suit your situation. They are available at short notice, and get the most cost-effective and best job completed for your situation. As a guide (with our methods) 180-240 meters of trench can be opened and backfilled within 1 day (soil dependent).

Underground Installation Quotes
After 20 years as an underground electrician, nothing that you show Brad will surprise him. Every quote is fixed price, and every outcome has been great. Because underground power installations are our speciality, we recommend the following:
1. Get your local electrician to quote your job (make sure it is a written quote, not just a ‘conversation’)
2. Make sure they stipulate
- cabe size
- route length (m)
- voltage drops (volts)
- currents (amps)
3. Phone Brad directly on 0427 663 334, and obtain a quote (free of charge) and compare the pricing.
We’re sure we won’t be beaten on price!
